Volunteering
The animal shelter is a volunteer-led organization, and we are always in need of adult volunteers who can commit to helping on a regular basis (we require all volunteers to make a minimum commitment of helping two times a month for a couple hours at a time). If you love animals, are at least 16 years old, and have time to help with dog walking, feeding, cleaning, and socializing shy pets, please call (508) 359-8989.
If you would like to volunteer, the first step in the process is to fill out our volunteer application and return the completed form to info@medfieldshelter.com. Once we have time to review it, we will contact you to set up training.
Please note: We expect all volunteers to help with some of the cleaning tasks, since keeping the entire facility clean is vital to providing a healthy environment for the pets and their caretakers, and is also very time consuming.
Daily Feeding , Cage Cleaning and Dog Walking
If you are interested in helping out with the feeding and cage cleaning that is done every morning and evening, please call the shelter at (508) 359-8989. We need help both on weekdays and weekends and do ask that you sign up in advance so that we know the pets are always cared for.
Transporting Pets to the Vet
We are always looking for ways to reduce our costs so we can afford to help more pets. One way we do that is by taking advantage of the low cost spay/neuter clinics in the area. We use the Rhode Island Community Spay/Neuter Clinic in Warwick, and Tufts Vet School's Luke and Lily Lerner Clinic They are doing a wonderful service and they are close enough for us to use in addition to our wonderful local vetclinics. One of our many volunteer opportunities is to drive our pets to their surgery appointments or bring them home after. If you can help by driving to or from one of these clinics, please let us know.Dog Walking
We walk the dogs 4 or 5 times daily and need volunteers willing to commit to a dog walking schedule. If you like to walk or run and want a nice companion, we usually have one or two dogs that would love to take you out for some fresh air. We expect our morning and evening dog walkers to also feed the dogs, sweep and mop out kennels and of course, scoop poop.
Maintenance and General Organizing
Here are just a few of the things that need to be done on an ongoing basis. If you can help with any of these tasks, we really need you!
- laundry -- we always seem to have laundry to do!
- cutting the grass
- care and feeding of the shrubs and other landscaping
- taking the recycling to the transfer station each week
- organizing supplies
- purchasing supplies
- photographing pets
Community Service
If you are a student and need to do community service, please fill out our student volunteer application so we can determine if there is a match between the hours you are available and our current openings. E-mail the completed form to info@medfieldshelter.com.
